Camping filter
All questions and answers about the Alb Filter camping sets, the matching filter cartridges and information on installation and replacement.
FREQUENT QUESTIONS
The following points must be taken into account when selecting a suitable filter:
- Size of the tank
- The pump already installed (submersible pump or diaphragm pressure pump)
- Hygienic condition of the tank and pipes
- Personal requirement: Should the water from the tank be used as drinking water without boiling?
Case 1 Mobile (exterior):
If the vehicle is relatively new or has been cleaned regularly in recent years, we normally recommend filling from the outside with an Alb Filter Mobil Set. This has the advantage that the system can be cleaned easily and the tank remains clean as the filling is done from the outside. No intervention in the system is required, such as replacing the pump or installing a filter in the water line. However, it is important to pay consistent attention to hygiene. This means that the filter must always be used when filling up and care should be taken not to contaminate the system in any other way, for example by wiping the aerator with a dishcloth (which can lead to a risk of recontamination!). To minimize the residual risk, the tank should be cleaned once a season.
Case 2 ProCamper (combination outside + inside):
If less emphasis is placed on hygiene in practice or if the motorhomes have somewhat older water pipes and water tanks, sterility cannot be guaranteed even with repeated cleaning and disinfection. In this case, we recommend the Alb Filter ProCamper set. With this set, the tank is filled from the outside with the Active broadband filter to filter out non-reproducible contaminants beforehand and prevent them from entering the tank.
The Nano germ barrier is then installed in the interior to protect against bacteria in the tank and pipes. The closer the germ barrier is installed to the tapping point, for example under the sink, the more reliable the protection. By installing the germ barrier inside, we recommend switching to a powerful pump, such as a diaphragm pressure pump with a pressure of 2 bar or more, in order to be able to use the full capacity of the filter.
Case 3 Travel (inside):
We recommend installing the Alb Filter Travel Set in motorhomes with large tanks of 150 liters or more, self-built vehicles and expedition vehicles. Filling such vehicles from the outside usually takes quite a long time due to the large tank volume. The filter is usually installed after the pump in the vehicle in the cold water line. However, this requires a diaphragm pressure pump with a pressure of approx. 3 bar in order to operate the filter properly.
There are various options for integrating the filter into the system for this variant:
- Directly before the tapping point under the sink.
- Directly after the pump to keep the entire pipe system clean.
- The filter is often also used redundantly in expedition vehicles. Bypasses are attached to the filter in order to be able to switch between filling and draining so that no impurities enter the tank.
Personal requirement:
To be able to consume cold water without hesitation, we strongly recommend using both filter cartridges: Active + Nano.
However, if the water is only used for making coffee, tea or cooking, the Active filter is sufficient.
Pre-filter Protect:
If water is taken from sources that contain a high amount of solids, sediment or biomass, we always recommend installing the Alb Filter Protect before the first filter stage (Active). This protects the filter cartridges from clogging and prevents premature replacement.
The Alb Filter Protect is available as a separate module and is already included in the ProCamper set.
Basically, the decision for a particular set is not a final step. Thanks to the modular design of the housing and connections, it is possible to convert the set at any time. This means that a filling set (mobile) can also be installed in the interior and vice versa. Flexibility in adapting the system is therefore guaranteed.
Our aim is to dispense with any preservation measures for the tank. With the nano germ barrier, we filter out bacteria purely mechanically so that pathogenic bacteria such as E. coli, legionella or faecal germs are reliably removed.
This also makes it possible to dispense with the use of silver ions and other antibacterial agents.
Thorough tank cleaning is essential before the water from the tank is consumed cold and before filtration begins. Disinfection ensures that existing pathogenic bacteria are killed and that nothing can enter the system from outside through the germ barrier. Cleaning also ensures that the service life of the filters can be extended considerably.
Active oxygen-based cleaners, which are effective against bacteria and other microorganisms, are ideal for disinfecting the tank. However, other suitable cleaning agents can also be used to ensure effective disinfection. It is important to carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding dosage and application in order to achieve effective cleaning and disinfection.
Yes, we assume that the cartridges are used regularly, even when refueling outside, where the cartridges are used every 3-7 days. After refueling, we recommend that you briefly unscrew the lids and drain the water in the housing while the cartridges remain installed. You should then close the lid again and store the filter in a suitable place, such as the garage. This will reduce the germ load and extend the service life of the cartridges.
In general:
Any water filter, regardless of its quality, can become contaminated. To protect against germs, we always recommend adding a germ barrier (nano) filter cartridge. There are also a few tips to reduce the germ load in the cartridges and extend the service life of the filters:
In general:
Any water filter, regardless of its quality, can become contaminated. To protect against germs, we always recommend adding a germ barrier (nano) filter cartridge. There are also a few tips to reduce the germ load in the cartridges and extend the service life of the filters:
Procedure:
1. After a vacation or a longer period of non-use of the filter system, remove the cartridges. Make sure they are thoroughly dry before storing them. Simply allow them to air dry and then store them in a cool, dry place.
2. Drying and storing the cartridges correctly will ensure that they do not become damp and that no germs or mold grow.
3. prolong the life of the cartridges and ensure optimum filter performance, we recommend changing the cartridges regularly every 4 to 6 months (depending on the specific cartridge and the manufacturer's recommendations).
4. Alternatively, you can also use the filter system or cartridge at home in the kitchen to tap freshly filtered Tapwater . This allows you to use the filter capacity and continuously enjoy high-quality water.
Note: Please do not place the cartridge in rice or store it in the refrigerator or in a sealed plastic bag.
Tip: When installing and removing the cartridge, you should pull it out slowly with a gentle twisting motion
Correct:
- Store in a cool, dry place. It must be well ventilated so that no mold can develop.
Wrong:
- Sealed plastic bag
- Store in a container with rice
- Storage in the refrigerator
Used cartridges should actually be disposed of in the residual waste. They are usually incinerated as harmful substances have accumulated inside the cartridges. It is important not to dispose of the cartridges elsewhere, but to dispose of them in the residual waste in accordance with local regulations.
Yes, each filter cartridge and its filter medium have a certain influence on the water pressure and flow rate. When installing indoors, a check of the pump should therefore be considered to ensure that it can deliver the required pressure and Flow rate .
It is also true that the refueling time is extended. In practice, when using the maximum filter level (Protect + Active + Nano), an average time of about 15 minutes can be expected to completely fill a 100 liter water tank. This may vary depending on the system and water pressure.
Above all, filters that filter adsorptively must have a low pore fineness in order to achieve good filter performance. Activated carbon filters, which hardly generate any pressure drop, usually consist of simple activated carbon granules, which form water bridges and hardly filter the water.
Our activated carbon blocks are sintered with a low proportion of binding agents. This significantly improves the filter performance compared to granules.
Other filter cartridges, such as our germ barrier (Nano), use hollow fiber membranes inside, which are strongly bundled. These cartridges hardly show any pressure drop at the beginning. Over time, however, the pores can gradually close, increasing the pressure drop on the cartridge. In order to still be able to use the full capacity of the cartridge, we recommend using a diaphragm pressure pump. This maintains sufficient pressure and ensures the efficiency of the cartridge.
As a general rule, a clogged cartridge is not a reason for complaint, but is subject to normal wear and tear.
All our filter cartridges are equipped with a mechanical pore fineness, which means that particles, solids and bacteria can clog the pores of the cartridges. The clearer and purer the input water, the longer it takes for the cartridge to clog.
The specified service life of 4 or 6 months is primarily based on hygiene reasons. It is important to replace the cartridges regularly to maintain optimum filter performance and hygienic conditions. The specified number of liters is a rough average value, as the service life of the cartridges may vary depending on individual water conditions.
What should I do if the Flow rate is reduced?
In a multi-stage system, first determine the affected cartridge by testing each cartridge individually.
Case 1: Pre-filter (Protect) is clogged
Turn the pre-filter over once and try to rinse it free again. However, experience has shown that the particles often become deeply embedded in the pores, so in most cases we recommend replacing the filter disk.
Case 2: Active cartridge is clogged
Experience has shown that particles often become deeply embedded in the pores, which is why it is recommended to replace the filter in most cases.
Case 3: Nano cartridge is clogged
If possible, the cartridge should always be operated in combination with a pre-filter or a somewhat coarser cartridge (such as Active), as it is very sensitive.
There are two ways to clear a clogged cartridge if necessary:
- Briefly blow out with compressed air (maximum 2 bar) against the direction of flow.
- Place the cartridge in ethanol for a maximum of 15 minutes to clean it.
Long-term solutions:
- Always try to fill up with water from the public mains, as this generally offers significantly better quality than unsafe sources.
- If possible, use a high-quality pre-filter such as the Alb Filter Protect module.
FILLING (MOBILE)
- Contaminants, bacteria and harmful substances do not get into the tank (water cannot tip over).
- No powerful pump is required.
- The filter can also be used to fill a canister, for example, if the tap cannot be reached by vehicle.
- No installation required.
- Thorough system cleaning and disinfection is required before using the filter if the water is to be consumed cold.
- Good hygienic behavior is required to ensure that no germs are introduced into the system.
No, the cartridges remain installed in the housing while you are on the move. In practice, simply open the lid to allow the stagnant water to drain out of the housing. The housing is then closed again and stored in the garage.
The cartridges are only removed and dried after your vacation.
Fixed installation (Travel)
- An internal nano germ barrier near the tapping point provides reliable protection against germs in the system.
- The Active broadband filter can also filter pollutants that are separated out by plastic tanks.
- The refueling process is not affected in terms of time, as filtering takes place internally.
- No pressurized tap is required.
- Powerful diaphragm pressure pump with approx. 3 bar required
- The filter must be installed in the water line.
- Dirty water enters the tank unfiltered. This disadvantage can be eliminated by using a switchover device.
Yes, depending on the filter cartridge selected, we recommend a corresponding pump:
Alb Filter Travel ACTIVE
Diaphragm pressure pump with at least 2.5 bar (36 psi) Water pressure
Alb Filter Travel NANO
Diaphragm pressure pump with at least 2 bar (29 psi) water pressure.
Due to the strong bundling, a strong submersible pump also works at the beginning. However, the entire capacity of the cartridge can only be utilized with a diaphragm pressure pump.
Alb Filter Travel FUSION (Active + Nano)
Membrane pressure pump with at least 3 bar (43 psi) Water pressure.
Filters are often already installed in well-known motorhomes. In such cases, the question arises as to whether it makes sense to supplement the existing filter and continue using it or whether a complete replacement is required.
We will be happy to help you assess which procedure makes sense in your specific case. To do this, we should obtain information about the filter already installed as well as your specific requirements and needs. Based on this information, we can make an informed decision together as to whether an addition to the filter or a complete replacement is recommended.
Replace:
If the filter needs to be replaced, an Alb filter can be installed in its place. Rigid osmosis hoses and connectors from John Guest or Reich are often used for existing filters.
- 1/2 inch external thread to the existing hose system
- 1/2 inch internal thread to the existing hose system
An alternative is to dismantle the osmosis hoses back to the point at which the usual flexible 10 mm hoses in the motorhome were adapted with a grommet. Our Travel connection set can then be fitted. This makes it easy to integrate our filter into the existing piping system.

It is advisable to install the filter directly under the sink, i.e. where the water to be consumed is drawn from. This variant offers the best protection against possible contamination in the water pipes. This variant is often used in vans and panel vans in particular due to limited space.
Alternatively, the filter is often positioned directly after the pump, often after the branch to the cold water line. This protects the entire line and all extraction points, which is a further advantage. We also often have an accessible service flap in which there is sufficient space for installation.
Yes, in most cases plastic connectors from John Guest, Reich or Whale are installed in such systems. Adapters are required to integrate the Alb filter into the existing water line.
If required, you are welcome to send us an inquiry with a picture of the existing system. On this basis, we can offer you a suitable solution if necessary.
The installation direction of the filter housing has no influence on the filter performance. You can install the housing in any position.

The equivalent of the UV system in our system is the nano hollow fiber membrane. Both technologies claim to filter or render microorganisms harmless.
With a UV system, germs are killed by ultraviolet radiation. With the nano germ barrier, on the other hand, bacteria are retained purely mechanically by the extremely fine pores of the hollow fibers.
UV system
- ✅ Cannot become blocked
- Quite high acquisition costs (from €500)
- Requires electricity
- ❌ Observe the flow rate. Otherwise there is no germ safety
- ❌ Optics can calcify. Germ protection is impaired
- Optics can become clogged with biomass. Germination safety is impaired
- ❌ Regular cleaning required
- ❌ If the germ concentration is high, there is no germ safety
- ❌ Water turbidity can influence the effectiveness. Germ safety is impaired
Hollow fiber membrane
- ❌ May clog
- ❌ Cartridges must be replaced
- ✅ Low acquisition costs (from €150)
- ✅ No electricity required
- ✅ Flow rate does not play a role
- Germ safety is guaranteed
Tip: If you opt for a UV system, make sure that the system is able to monitor the output of the light source electronically. This ensures reliable operation and enables you to detect possible drops in output or faults at an early stage.
In summary, it can be said that a hollow fiber membrane reliably filters out germs and is not subject to any influencing factors. The only drawback is the cartridges, which should be replaced regularly. The replacement interval of a hollow fiber membrane depends heavily on the quality of the incoming water. If clean water from public pipes is used, it can take several thousand liters before the membrane becomes clogged and the flow rate is impaired. However, if water is taken from very unclean sources, the membrane can become clogged after just a few hundred liters.
Filter cartridges
This depends on the filter cartridge installed. The following temperatures should be maintained:
Filter cartridge | Operating temperature |
---|---|
Active (camping, household) | 5 - 45 °C |
Active + (camping, household) | 5 - 45 °C |
Nano | 5 - 65 °C |
This primarily depends on the quality of the input water and differs depending on the filter cartridge used.
Filter capacity Active cartridge*: ⌀ 3000 liters or max. 4 months with continuous use
Filter capacity Nano cartridge*: ⌀ 5000 liters or max. 6 months with continuous use
* Average values - The capacity of the cartridge is highly dependent on the quality of the input water.
Active cartridge:
Cartridges that adsorptively and catalytically filter or bind pollutants become saturated over time. However, the service life depends on how many pollutants are present in the water. For German Tapwater we assume an average capacity of 2000-4000 liters.
Another important aspect is hygiene. As bacteria can colonize the filters and grow through the filter block over time, the cartridges should be replaced approximately every 4 months. This prevents bacteria from entering the system or affecting the downstream germ barrier (Nano).
Nano cartridge:
The nano cartridge is a hollow fiber membrane whose flow rate decreases the more contaminated water is filtered through it. Inside the cartridge are fine hollow fibers whose pores can become clogged with bacteria and other solids.
The service life of the cartridge therefore depends heavily on the quality of the input water. An exact specification in liters is not really possible, as it can vary in a wide range from a few liters to several thousand liters.
Practice when camping (no continuous use):
If the cartridges are not in use, it is advisable to remove and store them after your vacation. You can find more detailed information on this in our FAQ.
