Frequently asked questions
First and foremost, the choice depends on individual requirements. In summary, however, here is a brief overview of our Alb shower filter variants:
Nano shower filter:
Germ barrier against bacteria: This shower filter is specially designed to repel bacteria such as Legionella and E. coli. It can help to reduce the risk of infections or illnesses caused by these germs.
Shower filter Balance:
Activated carbon filter with mineralization and KDF: This filter consists of activated carbon granulate, which is used to reduce impurities such as chlorine, heavy metals and other chemical residues from the water. Mineralization also takes place, which adds minerals to the water. The additional KDF granules can also help to reduce heavy metals.
Shungite shower filter:
Shungite is a rare rock that is known for its potentially energizing properties. A shower filter equipped with shungite can help to purify the water and possibly have an energizing effect on the water.
The built-in filter cartridges can be replaced with another cartridge at any time, as the housings are modular. It is also possible to connect the housings in series to combine a Balance cartridge and a Nano cartridge, for example. However, the space and weight of the filter must be taken into account.
Installing an Alb filter in the shower is generally quite simple and only requires a few steps. Here is a general guide on how to install the Alb filter. Please note that the exact steps may vary depending on the model of Alb filter and the type of shower you have:
- Preparation: Make sure that the shower is switched off before you start.
- Dismantle the existing shower hose: depending on the model of your shower, this can be done simply by turning it clockwise. In some cases, you may need to use pliers. However, be careful not to damage the surface.
- Install the Alb filter: Take the Alb filter with the cartridge inserted and screw it onto the mixer tap. Make sure that it is firmly in place, but do not apply too much pressure as this can cause damage.
- Fit the shower hose to the filter: Now screw the shower hose onto the outlet side of the Alb filter. The same applies here: tight enough to ensure a good seal, but not too tight.
- Check for leaks: Turn the water on slowly and check whether water is leaking from the connection between the filter and mixer tap or between the filter and shower hose. If so, turn off the water and tighten the connections a little more.
- Rinse the filter: Let the water run for about 1 min. to rinse the filter. This removes any activated carbon residue that may have accumulated during the manufacture or storage of the filter.
Sometimes it can happen that it is not possible to install the Alb filter because the distance between the thread and the wall is too small (less than 35 mm). In this case, a spacer adapter is required, which can be found here.

Sometimes it may not be possible to install the Alb filter due to the thread being too close to the wall (less than 35 mm). This can happen if the wall is too close to the shower fitting or if the water connection has been installed in a corner or niche.
In such cases, you will need a spacer adapter. This adapter is basically a small extension piece that is screwed between the thread of your shower fitting and the Alb filter. It extends the thread of your fitting so that the Alb filter has enough space to connect.
This spacer adapter is a separately available accessory and can be purchased on our website. Please note that the use of an adapter will increase the overall height of your shower fitting, which could be a problem depending on your specific shower situation.
We recommend that you measure the distance between the wall and the thread of your shower fitting accurately before ordering the Alb filter. If the distance is less than 35 mm, please order the distance adapter together with the filter. This will ensure that you can easily install the filter as soon as it arrives.
Installing the spacer adapter is easy and requires no special tools. You simply screw the adapter onto the thread of your shower fitting and then screw the Alb filter onto the adapter. Once the adapter is installed, the Alb filter should have enough room to connect and function properly.
Our main aim is to reduce harmful substances from the water. Lime, which consists of calcium and magnesium carbonate, is not one of them.
In general: Even the best water filter can be contaminated. It is therefore important to observe the specified replacement intervals and ideally to rinse the filter daily
Your Alb filter will not lose its effectiveness if you do not use it for some time. We recommend removing the filter if you are going to be away for a long time and storing it in a cool, dry place.
Note: Please do not place the cartridge in rice or store it in the refrigerator or in a sealed plastic bag.
Here are the general steps for changing a shower filter cartridge:
- Preparation: Make sure you have a replacement shower filter cartridge for your Alb shower filter to hand and close the tap.
- Unscrew and open the housing: Unscrew the shower filter housing from the fitting and shower hose and open the cover on the outlet side (cover with external thread). The old cartridge should now be visible.
- Clean the housing: Clean the inside of the shower filter housing to ensure that there is no residue that could affect the performance of the new filter.
- Insert the new cartridge: Take the new cartridge and insert it into the housing. Press the nose into the opening of the lower cover with a slight twisting motion.
- Screw the cover back on: Screw the lower cover of the filter housing back on. Tight, but not too tight.
- Test the filter: Turn the water back on and let it run for one minute. Check for leaks and make sure that the water runs through cleanly.
- Regular maintenance: Remember to change the cartridge regularly. We recommend a replacement interval of 6 months for shower filter cartridges.

Yes, all cartridges are designed for the filter housing(element) and can be interchanged with the different cartridge types (Nano, Balance or Shungit). This flexibility allows you to choose the cartridge that best suits your specific water conditions.
It is important to note that different cartridges have different filtration properties and capacities. For example, the Balance cartridge has the ability to reduce chlorine in particular, but it does not have the ability to filter bacteria. This is in contrast to the Nano cartridge, which is specifically designed to cope with water contaminated with germs and bacteria, including Legionella. It is therefore crucial that you select the cartridge according to your individual water conditions and needs.
Do not forget to change the cartridge regularly to ensure optimum filtration performance. The recommended replacement frequency for shower filter cartridges is 6 months.
Used cartridges must be disposed of in the residual waste. Here the cartridges are sent for incineration, as harmful substances have accumulated inside, you must not dispose of the cartridges in any other way.
Technical questions
When using our Alb filter in the shower in conjunction with unpressurized boilers, please note that due to the high fineness of the cartridge, a pressure is built up in front of it (approximately at the level of the mains pressure), which only reduces slowly. Under certain circumstances, this can lead to damage to the non-pressurized boiler.
However, there are also pressure-resistant boilers to which the above restrictions do not apply. You can recognize these, for example, by the type plate " max. Operating pressure ... ". This must be at least 4 bar. However, these types of boilers are generally somewhat more expensive to purchase than non-pressurized boilers.
If you are not sure, ask your plumbing specialist.

Filter cartridges
This depends on the filter cartridge installed. The following temperatures should be maintained:
Filter cartridge | Operating temperature |
---|---|
Balance | 5 - 45 °C |
Shungite | 5 - 45 °C |
Nano | 5 - 65 °C |
Yes, each filter cartridge and its respective filter media can slightly influence the water pressure and flow rate.
This is primarily dependent on the quality of the input water and differs depending on the filter cartridge used.
Filter capacity Balance cartridge*: ⌀ 3000 liters or max. 6 months of continuous use
Filter capacity Shungit cartridge*: ⌀ 3000 liters or max. 6 months of continuous use
Filter capacity Nano cartridge*: ⌀ 5000 liters or max. 6 months of continuous use
*Average values - The capacity of the cartridge is highly dependent on the quality of the input water.
A helpful rule of thumb is to change the cartridge if you notice that the water flow decreases noticeably, as this may be a sign that the cartridge is saturated. It is also advisable to change the cartridge after 6 months at the latest, regardless of the water flow, to ensure optimum filter performance.
Balance cartridge:
Cartridges that adsorptively and catalytically filter or bind pollutants become saturated over time. However, the service life depends on how many pollutants are present in the water. For German Tapwater we assume an average capacity of 2000-4000 liters.
Another important aspect is hygiene. As bacteria can colonize the filters, activated carbon cartridges should be replaced regularly. This prevents the bacteria from entering the system or affecting the downstream germ barrier (Nano). A copper-zinc alloy is used in the Balance cartridge, which can inhibit bacterial growth to a certain extent.
Nano cartridge:
The nano cartridge is a hollow fiber membrane whose flow rate decreases the more contaminated water is filtered through it. Inside the cartridge are fine hollow fibers whose pores can become clogged with bacteria and other solids, so the service life of the cartridge depends heavily on the quality of the input water. It is not really possible to give an exact figure in liters, as it can vary over a wide range from a few liters to several thousand liters.
Another important aspect is hygiene. As bacteria can colonize the filters and grow through the filter block over time, the cartridges should be replaced approximately every 4 months. This prevents bacteria from entering the system or affecting the downstream germ barrier (nano).
